Yoga
What is Yoga?
In the yogic culture, Shiva is known as the adiyogi or the first yogi—the originator of yoga. He was the one who first put the seed of yoga into the human mind. According to yogic lore, thousands of years ago Shiva attained full enlightenment and abandoned himself in an ecstatic dance upon the Himalayas.
Yoga is a spiritual path that transforms and uplifts thought, feeling, health, and spirituality. The goal of Yoga is to awaken your inner self—a place of profound wisdom, love and vibrancy.
Today, the term “yoga” is most often associated with the physical postures of Hatha yoga. Here, “yoga” is used in the classical Eastern sense. Yoga means a path of enlightenment that uses meditative practices to increase self-knowledge and connect us more deeply with our inner self. Yoga holds that self-realisation, peace and oneness are available here and now, in this moment; if you sincerely seek self-knowledge, you can attain it.
Is yoga just stretching?
Although yoga does involve stretching your muscles, it is quite different from the warm-up stretches you might do at the gym. Let’s look at a few of the ways yoga is different:
*Yoga places emphasis on alignment. How you touch your toes is much more important than whether you can actually touch them or not.
*Most yoga poses do not stretch an isolated area, but rather stretch and strengthen the whole body.
*Many yoga styles involve a vinyasa flow, where movement from pose to pose is linked with an awareness of the breath. This style of yoga is very fluid.
*Asana, the physical postures, is only one aspect of a yoga practice, though it is the most well-known these days. Engaging in yoga through the asana practice (an excellent place to start) is only one of the eight limbs of yoga.
Does my body have to be flexible?
We all have different bodies, and that’s something to celebrate. There are some people who will never be able to put their feet behind their ears, but so what?! It may look impressive, but it doesn’t make anyone happier or healthier than anybody else.
That said, we do think you should work to improve your flexibility. Increased flexibility means better circulation which leads to a healthier body inside and out. But you don’t need the hamstrings of a gymnast to benefit from the yoga we teach. We will help you find the right place for your body in each yoga pose.
Can anybody practice yoga?
Yes, of course! Yoga is not a religion, so anyone of any faith can practice it. Children can do yoga, though we advise they begin at age nine and up. Children under nine will benefit most from doing relaxing meditation postures. Some yoga poses should be avoided by women who are pregnant, people with certain chronic health conditions, or those with high blood pressure. People with physical limitations or disabilities are very welcome to practice yoga.
Yoga focuses on deep breathing, which engages the body’s natural relaxation systems. This leads to a slow, profound relaxation of mind and body. Muscle relaxation, moderation of inflammation, and soothing of the nerves leads to a strong and healthy body that can fight illness and heal fully.
Why is yoga important in this modern world?
Yoga was developed by the sages of ancient India who lived thousands of years ago when life was slow, peaceful, and quiet. They developed the rules and disciplines of yoga in this atmosphere, where there was ample time for self-development and introspection.
Our modern world is quite different, with its phones, televisions, and hustle and bustle. Living in this world, we often have little time to reflect on our days and our growth as spiritual beings. Work and family stress can lead to depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Yoga, developed to center peaceful reflection and spiritual growth, can help relieve these symptoms and help us reconnect with our deepest self.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. we provide classes in bundles. This ensures that you dedicate a minimum number of classes to yourself and see the benefits. After all, we believe you are worth investing in! For companies and organisations, we provide corporate yoga packages. Payment is made prior to starting the class.
How often should I practice yoga?
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga, once said, “practice and all is coming.” He was right. Yoga is intended to be a daily practice. However, don’t get discouraged if you can’t always find the time, we know how hectic life can be.
If you can get on your mat at least twice per week, you will soon see your body changing in the most wonderful ways, becoming stronger, suppler, and more toned. You may also find yourself dealing better with the trickier things life throws at us from time to time.
Is It normal to find the first few classes difficult?
Yes! Yoga is much more cardiovascular than most people expect. The more you practice, the stronger and suppler your body will become, and so, in turn, the more you will enjoy your practice. With a bit of dedication, you’ll make rapid progress. Yoga is demanding but it is also invigorating. Our relaxation exercises at the end of every practice will ensure that you leave feeling calm and content! Bliss.
Can men do yoga?
Of course, the short answer is yes. Until recently, yoga was practiced exclusively by men. Many men are concerned that they will not be welcome in a yoga class or be flexible enough. This is a basic misconception; yoga will improve your flexibility, but you do not need to be flexible to do it. Since yoga was originally developed by men, many poses make more sense for a man’s body and require a lot of upper body strength that women often lack at first.
For inspiration, men need look no further than yoga’s most influential contemporary teachers, such as B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Bikram Choudhury, Rodney Yee and Baron Baptiste. So, it turns out, the long answer is also yes!
Is yoga for everyone?
Once upon a time, yoga outside of India was only done on communes by vegetarians. Today, everyone from doctors to CEOs practice yoga. Anyone can begin a yoga practice, even if they are not naturally flexible. If the idea of a noncompetitive, challenging form of exercise that you can do anywhere and progress in at your own pace is appealing to you, give it a try!
What should I bring
Yoga can be sweaty, so we recommend that you wear clothing that is easy to move in and bring something warm to wear afterwards. See you on the mat!
Cupping Therapy
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy is an ancient healing technique where special cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This helps improve blood flow, release muscle tension, and promote relaxation.
What are the benefits of cupping?
Cupping can help relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, promote relaxation, detoxify the body, and enhance overall wellness.
Does cupping therapy hurt?
Cupping is generally not painful, but you may experience a sensation of tightness or mild discomfort as the cups create suction. Some people feel a gentle pull, but it should not be unbearable.
What should I expect during a cupping session?
During a session, cups are placed on specific areas of the body. The suction draws blood to the area, which may result in temporary red or purple marks, known as “cupping marks,” that usually fade within a few days.
Is cupping safe?
Cupping is generally considered safe when performed by a trained professional. However, it’s important to discuss any health conditions with your practitioner before starting treatment.
How long do the cupping marks last?
The marks typically last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on your skin and the intensity of the suction.
How often should I get cupping therapy?
The frequency of cupping depends on your specific needs. Many people opt for sessions once a week or bi-weekly to experience the best results.
Can cupping help with specific conditions?
Yes, cupping can help with various conditions, including chronic pain, back and neck tension, headaches, anxiety, and respiratory issues like asthma.
Will cupping help me relax?
Yes, cupping promotes relaxation by stimulating blood flow, releasing muscle tension, and reducing stress. Many clients find it deeply calming and soothing.
How do I prepare for a cupping session?
To prepare for cupping, make sure you’re well-hydrated and avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to the treatment areas.
Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a means of adjusting the body’s energy (Qi) through the insertion of fine needles into carefully selected acupuncture points. These points lie on energy channels, and are directly related to specific organs and physiological functions. The needles are manipulated with a gentle action, by twirling or leaving in place for a few moments. This stimulates the flow of energy and removes blockages so that the Qi can be dispersed and regulated. When the Qi is flowing properly throughout the body, the balance is restored and results include deep relaxation, pain relief, and healing.
How does it work?
Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system causing neurotransmitters and neurohormones to be released, thereby boosting your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Acupuncture reduces pain by releasing the endorphins, which naturally occur in the body’s pain control system, into the central nervous system.
Regardless of just how it works, the fact remains that it is a relatively painless procedure with minimal side effects when done by a professional.
Does it hurt?
Receiving an acupuncture treatment is usually a relaxing experience. Often a patient will drift away during the session. Now that is not to say that it is devoid of sensation. But, generally the feeling is more of a tingling. Acupuncture needles do not cut the skin as regular injection needles do. Following treatment it is common for the patient to feel a tremendous sense of relaxation, and/or exhilaration.
Do I have to believe in it for it to work?
The answer to this question is no. While having a positive state of mind helps with any type of treatment, conventional or otherwise, it is not necessary to “believe” in acupuncture for it to work. This is evidenced not only through clinical study in “non-believers”, but by the fact that animals and small children who cannot be instructed to “believe” receive relief through the use of acupuncture.
How many treatments will I need?
The total number of treatments required to effect change in a condition varies dependent upon the disease, and its severity, the duration of the illness, the frequency of the treatments and the patient themselves. Consultation will offer the best guide for the length of treatment. However, as a rough guideline, the maximum benefit is usually obtained after approximately six treatments at weekly intervals. On occasions, follow-up treatments may be advised to prevent recurrence.
Are the needles clean?
We use sterile, disposable Japanese needles that are discarded safely following each treatment.
What conditions does acupuncture treat?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists approximately four dozen different conditions that can legitimately be treated by acupuncture. The most common uses for acupuncture in the West include: Pain Management, Asthma, Drug Abuse, Alcoholism, Smoking, Stroke, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Gynaecological and Obstetric Problems, and Sexual Problems. For further information on the conditions, please consult Dr. Ashish Tripathi.
Can children receive acupuncture?
Yes, children can receive acupuncture and often have excellent results with this treatment. However, in cases where the children are uneasy about the needles, a practitioner may choose to use an acupressure treatment (massage of the acupuncture points), as opposed to acupuncture.
